If you love puzzles, mazes and labyrinths, or know somebody that does, you’ve got to know about Perplexus puzzles! You may have seen these puzzle balls in stores, but if you didn’t know just how fun they are and what a perfect gift they make, you may have passed up a really cool toy!

Over 20 feet of track inside the maze.

Each Perplexus is a 3D maze ball, with a track inside a plastic globe. The track weaves in and out, twists and turns, and generally makes it hard to follow exactly where the path leads.

The object is to get a small steel marble from the beginning of the track, through the twisting obstacle course to the end. But that’s easier said then done. The track seems long, and it is.

A Perplexus globe is about the size of a soccer ball but can hold more than 20′ of track inside! Falling off the track is a common occurrence, but thankfully it’s easy to get the fallen marble back to the beginning of the course and try it again.

The marble can’t get lost, because the globe is sealed – so the ball stays on the inside with the track, and as long as it’s unbroken the ball stays on the inside.

If you’re looking for a gift for a puzzle fan, or perhaps a desktop puzzle that’s more intriguing than a Rubik’s cube, a Perplexus puzzle is an excellent choice.

But Which One Should You Choose?

Each of the Perplexus Maze Balls has it’s own kind of “personality” that makes it unique.  There are some that are more challenging, some that are better for beginners.  Some that are bigger or smaller. So here’s all your options…

Perplexus Maze Balls - Full Size

These Perplexus mazes are can be considered “full size”; They are the same general size as the first Perplexus ball: roughly the size of a soccer ball.

These mazes usually have about 100 twists, turns and challenges in them.

Perplexus Original / Beast

The first Perplexus was released in 2009, and the original 3D Labyrinth is still a great puzzle. It’s bright and colorful so it catches your attention right away. You might even mistake it for a hamster ball. But once you pick it up and give it a try, you’ll find it’s not so easy to put down!

The Perplexus Original is best found on eBay

Now the original is no longer made, but it was updated, recolored and rebranded as “Beast”.

The Original Perplexus had 100 turns, corners and obstacles on your way to the end of the maze. If you haven’t tried one yet, then The Beast or the Perplexus Original is the perfect Perplexus to start off with.

You can still find the Perplexus Original on eBay or other 2nd hand options.  But if you’re not hung up on getting the original colors, then you’ll be just as happy with the Beast.

Perplexus Portal

Among these captivating 3D mazes, the Perplexus Portal takes center stage as a true game-changer. Imagine navigating through 150 intricate obstacles while flipping, twisting, and turning the ball in your hands. The Portal introduces over 50 magical portals that unlock new paths and fresh challenges, adding an element of surprise and strategy to each twist of the wrist. With three different starting points, players can practice and perfect their skills at varying difficulty levels, making it accessible and engaging for everyone from puzzle novices to seasoned experts.

The addition of a secret storage compartment hidden within the ball adds a layer of mystery and utility, making it a conversation starter even when it’s on display using the included base stand. For those who’ve conquered the Perplexus Beast™ or Perplexus Rebel™, the Portal offers a new frontier of complexity and excitement.

In the broader lineup of Perplexus puzzles, the Portal stands out with its unique mechanics and futuristic design. Its 150 gates demand precision and patience, while the magic portals offer unexpected shifts in the maze, challenging you to think several steps ahead.

It’s no wonder this puzzle is recommended for ages 8 and up—it’s an activity cube that captivates both kids and adults alike. Whether you’re seeking a fun way to relieve anxiety, a gift for a teen, or just a new challenge to master, the Perplexus Portal promises hours of addictive fun and mental stimulation.

Perplexus Epic

If the Perplexus Portal takes you on a futuristic journey, the Perplexus Epic brings you back to the roots of 3D maze puzzles with a classic challenge that’s both thrilling and nerve-wracking. With 125 carefully designed obstacles, this spherical puzzle is not for the faint of heart.

The Epic is where it all began for many puzzle enthusiasts, offering an intense test of skill and patience. As you guide the ball through tricky maneuvers like the serpentine and the launch ramp, every twist and turn demands your full attention. The path may be numbered, but don’t be fooled—it’s easy to play but incredibly hard to master.

Perplexus Epic

Perplexus Epic is also a great choice as a sensory toy for autistic children.

The Perplexus Epic’s design is a testament to the addictive nature of 3D puzzles. Housed within a clear sphere, it presents a visual spectacle as you flip, twist, and spin the ball 360 degrees to navigate through the maze.

It’s a game that keeps you on the edge of your seat, whether you’re racing against the clock or simply trying to beat your last record. The Epic is perfect for those who love a challenge, making it a great gift for kids and a favorite fidget toy for adults alike.

It’s also highly recommended as a sensory toy for autistic children, providing a focus that’s as soothing as it is stimulating.

When it comes to fidget toys, the Perplexus Epic stands out not just as a fun distraction but as a formidable challenge that engages your mind and motor skills. It’s more than just a puzzle; it’s a mental workout that rewards perseverance and problem-solving.

As part of the Perplexus family, the Epic is a must-have for anyone who loves 3D puzzles, whether you’re adding it to your collection or experiencing the thrill of Perplexus for the first time. Perplexus Rebel

For those new to the world of Perplexus, the Perplexus Rebel is the perfect starting point.

Formerly known as the Perplexus Rookie, the Rebel offers a gateway into the addictive challenge of 3D maze puzzles. With 70 obstacles, this puzzle is designed to introduce players to the concept of flipping, twisting, and spinning their way through high-tension maneuvers.

Obstacles like the igloo and scary stairs are just a few of the tricky challenges that make this maze engaging, yet accessible, making it an ideal choice for beginners or younger players.

The Perplexus Rebel is an ideal choice for beginners or younger players.

The Rebel may be the current version of what used to be the Perplexus Rookie, but don’t underestimate its complexity. While it might have fewer obstacles than the Perplexus Portal or the Perplexus Epic, it still offers a solid challenge that requires focus and dexterity.

This puzzle ball is easy to pick up but difficult to master, with the same 360-degree twists and turns that define the Perplexus experience. Whether you’re looking for a fun activity for kids or a stress-relieving fidget toy for adults, the Rebel has a universal appeal.

In comparison to the more advanced Perplexus models like the Portal and Epic, the Rebel provides a slightly more forgiving experience, making it a great warm-up for those who might find the 125 obstacles of the Epic or the 150 obstacles of the Portal a bit daunting. It’s also a fantastic option for family game nights, offering an engaging puzzle that’s challenging enough to keep everyone entertained, yet approachable enough for younger players. Whether you’re new to Perplexus or looking to introduce someone else to the fun, the Rebel is a perfect entry point into this captivating world of 3D mazes.

Perplexus Go and Perplexus Mini – Smaller Size, Smaller Maze, Same Fun

If the idea of having these maze balls hanging around the room taking up space is not exactly your idea of Feng Shui, you might do well to go with something a little smaller.

Don’t worry! These actually are just smaller versions of the same style, with fewer challenges on the inside. Instead of around 100 challenges, you can expect these compact versions to include around 30 or so.

The prices are usually a little lower, too, making them a good entry if you’re looking for a great kid gift for any age

Perplexus Go! Spiral

For those who love the thrill of Perplexus but need something more compact, the Perplexus Go! Spiral offers a perfect solution. This portable version of the classic 3D maze puzzle is designed for on-the-go fun, fitting easily into your bag or pocket so you can take it anywhere.

There are 35 challenging obstacles in the Perplexus Go! Spiral

The Perplexus Go! Spiral may be compact, but don’t be fooled by its size—this little labyrinth is packed with 35 brand-new obstacles that are just as challenging and rewarding as those found in the larger models.

It’s easy to pick up and start playing, but mastering the maze is a whole different story, making it an addictive challenge whether you’re a Perplexus veteran or new to the game.

It’s a fantastic option for those who want to keep their minds sharp while on the move, and it’s a great introduction to the Perplexus universe for anyone looking to test their skills in a more manageable, travel-friendly format.

Perplexus Mini – Cascading Cups & Spiral

For fans of Perplexus who are looking for a quick and portable challenge, the Perplexus Mini series offers a delightful solution with the Mini Spiral and Mini Cascading Cups.

These pint-sized puzzles pack all the excitement of the full-sized Perplexus mazes into a smaller, faster format that’s perfect for testing your patience and skills on the go. Each mini version comes with its unique set of obstacles, providing a fresh and engaging experience that’s both addictive and fun.

Perplexus Mini Spiral

The Perplexus Mini Spiral

The Perplexus Mini Spiral is a whirlwind of challenges in a compact form. This tricky maze features a course filled with spirals that will put your coordination and dexterity to the test.

As you tilt, spin, and flip the puzzle, the goal is to guide the ball smoothly through the spirals without letting it fall off the track.

While it may be smaller in size, the Spiral doesn’t skimp on difficulty—it’s just as tough to master as its larger counterparts.

And the best part? You can easily take it with you wherever you go, turning any idle moment into a chance to conquer the maze.

On the other hand, the Perplexus Mini Cascading Cups offers a different kind of challenge.

The Perplexus Mini Cascading Cups

Instead of spirals, you’ll navigate your way through a series of cascading cups, each one requiring precise control to keep the ball moving smoothly.

Like the Spiral, the Cascading Cups maze is all about maintaining focus and finesse as you tilt, spin, and flip the puzzle to reach the end.

Both Mini versions are perfect for Perplexus enthusiasts looking for a quick puzzle fix, or for newcomers wanting to dip their toes into the world of 3D maze games.

With their portable size and engaging gameplay, the Perplexus Mini Spiral and Mini Cascading Cups are really great for either a Perplexus fan that wants to have “just a little” on that road trip, or a good gift option for puzzle lovers of any age.

Some More Unique Options

Perplexus has gotten several form factors now, and it’s not just in the “3d maze balls” option.

Here are some options that may appeal to you, even though they aren’t quite the same twisting, turning globes of the usual Perplexus versions already mentioned

Perplexus Light Speed

The Perplexus series has long been known for its mesmerizing 3D mazes contained within spheres, but with the Perplexus Light Speed, they’ve taken the challenge to a whole new dimension—literally.

This electrifying version of the classic puzzle game breaks free from the traditional ball shape and introduces an orb-shaped center that commands the action with flashing lights and pulsating music.

It’s not just about guiding the ball through a maze anymore; it’s about racing against the clock, following rapid-fire color commands, and pushing your reflexes to the limit. The combination of light, sound, and physical skill makes Perplexus Light Speed a thrilling experience that’s as much about speed as it is about strategy.

Perplexus Light Speed

The Perplexus Light Speed adds game modes for additional challenges

At the heart of Perplexus Light Speed is its colorful 3D maze, where you must maneuver the ball through endless twists and turns to reach color-coded goals—each one lighting up to direct your next move.

As the center orb flashes green, blue, yellow, or purple, you need to quickly and accurately guide the ball to the corresponding goal without falling off the track. The lights and sounds aren’t just for show; they elevate the gameplay, adding an extra layer of tension and excitement that will have your adrenaline pumping.

With each twist and turn, you’re racing against time, trying to keep up with the orb’s commands, and every successful navigation feels like a triumph.

Distinct Game Modes

Perplexus Light Speed offers three distinct game modes to keep things fresh and challenging.

Beginners can ease into the game with 20 levels of increasing difficulty, while more advanced players will find themselves in a high-speed race to hit as many color goals as possible before time runs out.

For those who like a bit of teamwork with their challenge, there’s also a mode where you can team up with friends, passing the game unit back and forth as you navigate from one goal to the next.

Whether you’re a Perplexus veteran or a newcomer, Light Speed offers a unique and electrifying twist on the classic 3D maze that’s sure to captivate and challenge in equal measure.

Whether you’re solving them solo or challenging friends and family, these magical mazes are sure to cast a spell on your game night.

Star Wars Perplexus!

Star Wars tie-ins are always a popular choice.  It’s no different here.  I’m sure you’ll appreciate this little gem of a Perplexus!

The Star Wars Perplexus Death Star

Our last entry in our Awesome Perplexus Round-Up is the Star Wars Death Star! And what a perfect match to finish out this list!

The insanity of a Perplexus in a Star Wars Death Star setting! The only problem is that it’s out of print, so you aren’t likely to find it at most retailers. So this is another one that you’ll want to get from ebay (the picture here contains my affiliate link for ebay.)

Perplexus Star Wars Death Star

In this Perplexus maze game, the steel marble is the “X-Wing starfighter” working through the puzzle mechanics to reach the end and “destroy the Death Star”. You’ll twist and turn your “X-wing” through the complex 3D maze that mirrors the treacherous paths and corridors of the infamous space station. It’s not just about navigating the maze; it’s about reenacting the legendary trench run, where one wrong move will send you spiraling back to the beginning. It’s too bad that this one, like the Harry Potter Prophecy, is no longer in production. You used to be able to get it new in the box for about $50.  Not anymore.  Now that it’s somewhat rare and a sought-after item, you’ll pay a little more than that for one that’s new and in-the-box. Again, if you’re eager to add this piece of Star Wars and Perplexus history to your collection, your best bet is to hunt it down on eBay or other second-hand marketplaces. If you’re shopping for a puzzle of game for a Star Wars fan, then the Perplexus Death Star is the perfect choice!
